I selected “Cylinder” as my primary form and the verb “bundle” as my animation verb. In the beginning, when I was finding ways to bundle cylinders, the idea of subtraction stood out to me. Stemming from that, I created a structure using a system of coils that all had subtractions. I had an underlying logic behind the entire structure which was using negative space to create scale as opposed to adding shapes to make the form larger.

On a visit to Stanford University, I encountered Richard Serra’s “Sequence” and took photos of the structure to use as inspiration and refer to while working on my own structure.

I began bundling cylinders around each other so that they not only adhered to the same logic, but mimicked the fluidity of “Sequence”. Furthermore, in order to make a walkable structure, I wanted for there to be a clear path between the cylinders.

Another design choice that I made was to use the negative space created by the subtractions as arches. These arches not only support the form, but act as windows to provide abundant natural light.

This section drawing that I made emphasizes the fluidity of the structure from its highest point to its lowest points, the underlying logic behind the structure, and the system of arches that comprise it. In total, the structure contains nine arches, six of which serve the main purpose of a window, and all of which also act as doorways.
